F1 on this Day! Empty On this day in F1

August the 1st-
Jim Clark wrapped up his second world championship today in 1965 when he won the German Grand Prix at the Nurburgring in dominant fashion for lotus. It was his sixth victory out of seven races so far in the season when few drivers could touch him.

Today in 1976 at the German GP at the Nurburgring Niki Lauda had a Huge accident when his Ferrari went off the track, burst into flames and then bounced back into the middle of the track where it was hit by two other cars. Drivers Guy Edwards, Harrold Ertl, Brett Lunger and Arturo Merzario managed to pull Lauda out of his burning Ferrari but he suffered serious burns also breathed in toxic fumes causing damage to his lungs and was even read the last rites by a priest. Amazingly he recovered and unbelievably back in the Ferrari behind the wheel in just six weeks after his horrific accident. What a guy total F1 legend.

F1 on this Day! Empty August the 2nd

Post by RussLad12 Wed Aug 02, 2017 3:56 pm

From the very start of the world championship in 1950 the German GP has always been run at the Nurburgring or at Hockenheim, with one exception . Today in 1959 the race was held at the curious AVUS circuit in Berlin. The track is really just two long stretches of motorway with an hairpin at each end and is now part of a public highway/road. The race was split into heats amid concerns that tyres wouldn't last. British driver Tony brooks won for Ferrari with Americans Dan Gurney and Phil Hill making it an all Ferrari podium.

The 1970 German Grand Prix held on this day was switched to Hockenheim at the last minute after the drivers refused to race at the Nurburgring until safety was improved. Austrian Jochen Rindt won to take him 20 points clear in the championship but it was his last ever win as he was tragically killed later in that season at the Italian GP to become F1's only posthumous world champion.
R.I.P. Jochen.

Something new, I've decided to do a small piece on F1 on this day I've posted it in AL1 news and announcements which may move to the news and messages on the home page in the future so all leagues can see them.

F1 on this Day! Empty August the 3rd

Post by RussLad12 Thu Aug 03, 2017 12:36 pm

British Driver Peter Collins from England was a favourite of the great Enzo Ferrari after he selflessly gave up his car for Fangio at the Italian Grand Prix in 1956 when Collins himself still had a chance of becoming world champion that very season.
Today in 1958 Peter Collins was pushing so hard in the German GP at the Nurburgring when he ran wide and one of his wheels got caught up in a ditch, which caused his Ferrari to somersault across the track throwing Collins into a tree. Sadly he later died that same day with serious head injuries.

At the Hungarian GP on this day in 2008 another Ferrari driver hit trouble, albeit much less serious. Felipe Massa looked to have the race done a dusted when just three laps from the end and win of the race his engine decided to blow up and let go on him and the Ferrari coasted to a standstill on the main straight. "Racing can be a cruel sport" said Massa. His misfortune handed a maiden victory to the next Flying Finn, Heikki Kovalainen who was driving in the McLaren alongside team mate Lewis Hamilton.

F1 on this Day! Empty August the 4th

It is easy to look at Fangio simply in terms of statistics as he won 24 of his 51 grand prix's and took 27 pole positions also winning the drivers world championship a remarkable 5 times which in their time with the open cars as they were was no easy feat. On this day in 1957 he showed just how he racked up such impressive statistics when he drove the race of his life to win the German GP at the Nurburgring. A bad pit stop put him more than a minute adrift of Hawthorn in the lead but he then set about reeling the English man back in with a series of out of this world laps. His best was six seconds better than his own lap record and eight seconds faster than his pole position lap time. It was his last victory and it clinched him is fifth world championship. He said "I'd never driven like that before, and I knew I would never again". One of the best F1 drivers of all time, thank you for your history Fangio.

Sir Jackie Stewart also produced perhaps his greatest ever drive at the Nurburgring on this day in 1968, in river wet conditions he totally out classed everyone in the field to finish four minutes ahead of the legend Graham Hill who finished in second place. It's funny how British drivers are so good in the wet, but has it rains in Britain almost every day is it any wonder.

F1 on this Day! Empty August the 5th

Michael Schumacher took time out of his world championship winning schedule today in 1995 when he got married to Corinna Betsch. The new Mrs Schumacher obviously has something of a penchant for German racing drivers, having previously been Heinz-Harald Frentzen's girlfriend before she started going out with Michael.

On this day in 2004 Williams announced they had re-signed Jenson Button for the 2005 and 2006 seasons. The team he was with at the time, BAR-Honda, claimed he was contracted to them and the case went to Formula One's Contract Recognition Board which ruled in BAR's favour. A year later he was bizarrely caught up in the opposite position: having signed a deal with Williams to drive for the 2006 season Jenson decided he wanted to stay with BAR and after a lengthy dispute he had to pay out a reported £20m to Williams to release him from the signed contract deal with them.

F1 on this Day! Empty August the 6th

Post by RussLad12 Sun Aug 06, 2017 8:27 am

August the 6th, Today in 2006 was a better day for button when he finally took his first F1 victory for Honda at the Hungarian GP on the hungaroring. He started way down the field in 14th but helped by wet conditions and a safety car appearance, JB carved his way through the field to win for the first time in 113 attempts. He said what an amazing day it's been, coming through from 14th on the grid to win the race was brilliant, I could not have done it in a better way.

Robert Kubica started his F1 career in the same race, making his debut for the BMW Sauber team after regular driver Jacques Villeneuve sat the race out after an accident in the previous race.
The young polish driver impressed by qualifying ninth and finishing seventh before he was disqualified after his car was found to be under weight. Nonetheless he kept his seat and was soon signed up as a full time driver for the 2007 season.

F1 on this Day! Empty August the 7th

Post by RussLad12 Mon Aug 07, 2017 10:21 am

August the 7th: because there was only a small entry of formula one cars at the 1966 German GP the organisers decided to run F2 cars at the same time. In the race Jim Clark made a rare mistake and crashed out leaving Jack Brabham to grab his 4th consecutive win. Jacky Ickx and English man John Taylor were among the F2 runners and the two collided on the opening lap, both cars spun off and Taylor's car burst in to flames. The driver from Leicester suffered serious burns and died a month later.

The McLaren-Honda team continued their extraordinary season of dominance today in 1988 at the Hungarian GP at the hungaroring. Ayrton Senna led Alan Prost home for yet another 1/2 finish, one of ten for McLaren in a season when they only lost one race.

F1 on this Day! Empty August the 8th

Post by RussLad12 Mon Aug 07, 2017 9:30 pm

August the 8th: Argentina and Brazil have a rich history of producing top F1 drivers, but neighbouring Chile do not have such a great pedigree. Eliseo Salazar is the only Chilean to have competed in Formula one and he is most famous for being attacked by three time world champion Nelson Piquet during the German GP at Hockenheim on this day in 1982. Nelson was leading the race and coming up to lap back marker Salazar who failed to slow down and then crashing into Piquet taking them both out of the race. Piquet was furious when he climbed out of his car and he started attacking Salazar pushing him and trying to kick him as amazed spectators looked on. Murray Walker found himself suddenly commentating on a fight rather than an F1 race, "And take that" Murray cried as Piquet went for hapless Chilean.

After the legend Eddie Jordan sacked Heinz-Harald Frentzen halfway through the 2001 season the Irishman didn't take long to replace him and immediately signed up his old friend Jean Alesi on this day back in 2001.

F1 on this Day! Empty August the 9th

Post by RussLad12 Wed Aug 09, 2017 12:03 pm

Lady Luck is a crewel mistress and Nigel Mansell often seemed to be on her bad side, Mansell was leading the Hungarian GP today in 1987 ahead of his bitter rival and Williams team mate Nelson Piquet, but with just 5 laps to go in the race Nigel lost a right rear wheel nut and was forced to retire handing the victory to Nelson Piquet.

Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso who like Piquet and Mansell they rarely saw eye to eye. During qualifying for the 2007 Hungarian Grand Prix Alonso held up Lewis in the pit box, scuppering the Englishman's chance of taking pole position. Hamilton was furious and the press reported that he had sworn at Ron Dennis over the radio, but a McLaren statement issued on this day denied it: The team have investigated this claim and reviewed the radio transmissions and we can categorically confirm that Lewis did not use the "F" word at any time during any conversation with the team.

F1 on this Day! Empty August the 10th

Post by RussLad12 Fri Aug 11, 2017 11:38 am

August the 10th: today in 1986 Formula 1 went under the iron curtain for the first time when the first Hungarian GP was held at the hungaroring out side Budapest, 2000 spectators turned up to watch a good battle between Ayrton Senna and Nelson Piquet and Piquet crossed the line to take the victory.

Damon Hill almost pulled off the most impressive and suprising victory of his Grand Prix career on this day in 1997. He had put the Arrows A18 in third place on the grid for the Hungarian GP.
During the race he achieved a measure of personal redemption when he over took Michael Shumacher and thereafter it looked like he would race to a famous victory. With just three laps to go, disaster: the Arrows had an hydraulic failure and hill saw his 35 second lead over jacques Villeneuve vanish. The Englishman had to settle for a heartbreaking second place. He said "I was beginning to think I could win and when you do something always goes wrong".

F1 on this Day! Empty August the 11th

Post by RussLad12 Fri Aug 11, 2017 12:00 pm

August the 11th: Tazio Nuvolari was the ultimate pre-war driver who won every major race going. 'II maestro' was described by Ferdinand Porsche as the greatest driver of the past, the present, and the future. Famed for his pure grit and determination as much as his speed, he once had a Maserati specially adopted so he could drive in the race with his leg still in plaster after he had broken it in a crash a month earlier. He died on this day in 1953 from a stoke aged just 60. Alberto Ascari, luigi Villoresi and Juan Fangio pushed his coffin on a car chassis on the mile-long procession as all of Italy mourned.

Today in 1996 Jacques Villeneuve won the Hungarian GP, it was his third victory of his maiden Formula One campaign. He led home Damon Hill in a Wiiliams 1-2 finish which wrapped up the constructors championship for the legend Sir Frank Williams's team for the eighth time - equaling Ferrari's record. The result also meant Villeneuve and Hill were now the only drivers who could win the drivers title - a contest that would go down to the final race in Japan when the Englishman triumphed.
