Looking Ahead: Korea
The Korea International Circuit
Located near Yeongam the Korea International Circuit is one of the newest additions to the Formula 1 calendar. The 5.62km circuit boasts 3 sectors that vary wildly, each presenting the drivers with a different challenge. Sector 1 is all about outright speed with the second longest straight in Formula 1 currently (1160m) accompanied by heavy braking into sharp hairpins giving the drivers great overtaking opportunities. Sector 2 consists more of fast sweeping bends testing the car's downforce levels and Sector 3 almost morphs into a street circuit with barriers close to the track ready to punish any wayward drivers.
First raced in 2010 the circuit has been plagued by problems since it's first race weekend. Originally supposed to be completed by July 2010 the circuit inspection was only held 11 days before the first practice session. With the final track surfacing being completed so close to the event itself the rain that appeared on race day meant a long delay to the start of the race with it being completed in near-night conditions. Originally, the Korea International Circuit was to be the centrepiece of a new motoring city but unfortunately these facilities never materialised. Because of this and the isolated nature of the track attendances at races have been poor and, unfortunately, although being included in the provisional 2014 calendar the circuit has since been removed.
