Looking Ahead: Abu Dhabi
Yas Marina Circuit
Located on an island of reclaimed land on the east coast of Abu Dhabi the Yas Marina Circuit plays host to Formula 1's only day/night race. The Yas Mariana circuit is the largest permanent sports venue lighting project in the world, a record previously held by Losail circuit in Qatar. Designed by Herman Tilke this 21 corner track consists of long straights (including the third longest on the current calendar at 1140m long) and tight corners twisting through sand dunes and also the Yas Viceroy Abu Dhabi Hotel. Officially opened in November 2009 with a GP2 Asia Series test the circuit hosted it's first race of the Formula 1 World Championship a week later. Held at the end of the 2009 season the first race held at the circuit was a dead rubber with both championships having been decided in Brazil. The 2010 race was a different prospect however with 4 drivers entering the final race still being able to win the championship. Fernando Alonso entered the 2010 race with an 8 point championship lead over Mark Webber and a further 7 on Sebastian Vettel but Alonso spent most of the race bottled up behind the Renault of Vitaly Petrov and could only finish 7th. Vettel went on to win the race and claimed his first Formula 1 Driver's Championship.
For 2014 the Abu Dhabi grand prix has been moved back to it's original slot as the final race of the season and at the time of writing will have a double point system implemented for the race.
